Back To The Knife

A gift for his 74the birthday in 2008, it is a CAS Iberia Paul Chen Hanwei Historical Bowies Collection Horse-Gator Bowie Knife with Box from C.J., Sr's Estate, as the title implies.

It is one of three given to him new that day which were added to his extensive collection with many Hanwei pieces.  Never sharpened, used, worn or carried, .

The knife, and the leather and brass sheath are in excellent overall with a lightly damaged box as shown.

Horse-Gator Bowie by Paul Chen / Hanwei

The Hanwei Horse Gator Bowie (crafted by Dalian Hanwei Metal/Paul Chen) is an extensively researched and historically inspired reproduction.

  Rather than copying a single, specific 19th-century artifact, it was designed as a premium tribute to the celebrated "half-horse, half-alligator" folklore that defined the American frontier.

 The knife combines key aesthetic and practical details from historical Sheffield and American Bowie Knives.

 The most striking historical homage is the brass pommel with the legendary "half-horse, half-alligator" Repoussé motif.

 The 9 3/8" blade is a traditional clipped-point shape made from high-carbon steel, which was preferred in historical designs for superior agility and a pronounced distal taper.

 Designed with authentic wood grip scales secured by brass pins, and crossguard.

 The Scabbard is top-grain, leather with brass metal mounts and a traditional leather belt frog.

 Hanwei (often operating under Paul Chen) has long been celebrated for taking the time to study extant museum and private historical collections to nail the "feel" and weight of original antique weaponry.  While original antique Bowie specimens are highly rare and primarily reside in collections, the Horse Gator model captures the aggressive, romanticized spirit of the 1830s–1850s fighting knife.

The three knives mentioned and the one shown and offered here replicate knives that currently exist in private collections and are so beautifully made as to become instant collector pieces in their own right.
